Scope of the fishing license:

The outer limit of the fishing license rules is the same as the freshwater limit in the estuary, i.e. a line from the northernmost cape on Älvnabben at Västerberget over Knippelholmens fyr to the western pier at Arendal marina on Hisingen. For fishing downstream/west of the Göta River bridge to the mouth of the sea, no fishing license is currently required for sport fishing. However, the Yellow Card rules apply with minimum sizes, closed seasons and a maximum of two salmonids per day, etc.

Fishing rules:

Minimum size for salmon and trout is 45 cm. Fishing season for trout and salmon is 1/4-14/10.

Boat fishing is allowed, but beware of the busy boat traffic and the occasionally strong current. Otherwise, see Fishing rules in the Yellow Card guide.

Description:

The Göta River is the country's most water-rich watercourse, with a total length of 72 miles from its headwaters in Norway to its mouth in the sea at Gothenburg. The average water flow is 575 m³/s, of which one third normally flows in the Göta River past Gothenburg and the rest through the Nordre River. The water system is also the country's most species-rich watercourse, where as many as 38 freshwater species have been recorded and most marine fish from the estuary. There were sturgeon here in the 19th century and even a tuna has been landed at Gullbergsvass. The length of the Yellow Card from Bohus/Kungälv to the estuary is 25 km and converted to an area of 750 hectares, making it the largest fishing area on the Yellow Card.

There are fishing opportunities here that have only been discovered to a small extent. Every year thousands of salmon rise in the Göta River. Where they stop and where they can be caught is an almost completely unexplored area. We know that some have been caught in the estuary between the Älvsborg Bridge and the sea, and some in Gothenburg harbor. Some stands are found at the diving pits along Ringön, the piers at the Göta River Bridge and the railway bridge at Tingstad. 9 kilos have been reported, but considerably larger ones swim up towards Lilla Edet every year.

The best fishing for sea trout is in the estuary between Älvsborgsbron and Käringberget. Well-known places are Röda Sten, Ryaverket's discharge, Tångudden and "Vita gaveln" at Nya Varvet.

Pike fishing is barely tested on the stretch and there is much to explore. From Marieholm and upwards, there are opportunities for trolling where boat traffic is sparser. At the "roof" of the Tingstad tunnel, on both sides of the river, there is backwater with the main current nearby. Large numbers of fish gather here at certain times and large perch have been caught here.

In the fall and especially when ice fishing in the winter, there are chances to catch whitefish in Gothenburg harbor, where the outer part of Sannegårdshamnen, Klippans steamboat pier, Frihamnen and Marieholm are good places. We recommend a maximum catch of 10 whitefish per person per day. At Eriksberg and Sannegårdshamnen, successful fishing for whiting takes place mainly in the fall, but other marine species such as cod and herring also pass through here regularly.

For the metare, there is a very large potential in the Göta River for most fish species in the fish fauna. Some reported fish from the area are roach 0.93 kilograms, cormorant 1.2 kilograms, ide 2.46 kilograms and bream 5.0 kilograms.

Surface area: 750 ha.

The Göta River is part of the Yellow Card, a fishing license that covers 60 different lakes and rivers in the Gothenburg area.
